I was very influenced by Gustave Dore at the time, particularly his plates for <a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Orlando_Furioso_by_Gustave_Doré">Orlando Furioso</a> and <a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Gustave_Doré_-_Inferno">Dante's Inferno</a>. Here's a plate that might seem familiar to those of you who've read "The Gryphon":</p> <p><img src="http://agitainment.com/ics/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/Inferno_Canto_10_verses_40-42.jpg"></p> <p>As for the story, I was inspired by <a href="http://www.richardsala.com/">Richard Sala</a> (probably most famous for his <a href="http://lovetheline.blogspot.com/2009/02/invisible-hands-by-richard-sala.html">"Invisible Hands"</a> animated shorts that played on Liquid Television way back in the day on MTV) when I wrote it. His work (at least back then) tended to appropriate the various cues of the horror and noir genres to create a kind of dreamworld that more suggests a story than tells one. </p> <p>Under Sala's spell, I tried to do the same for the fantasy genre. I was more concerned with creating an "open" story that leaves a great deal to the reader's imagination. Nothing at all like The Collector and UFO. </p> <p>I may go back to trying my hand at this technique sometime in the future.
